'No place for a pushchair, a wheelchair, in actual fact a pedestrian'

Rubber 'wheel stops' are the business for Laois footpaths, with more requested outside an Italian restaurant in Abbeyleix.

Cllr John Joe Fennelly said even pedestrians are having trouble walking on the footpath outside the family run Papa Noni's in Market Square.

He tabled a motion to the September meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, asking Laois County Council to install more in the square.

"You installed some last year as a pilot. They went down very well. We need them in front of Papa Noni's. If a van with a hitch parks there, there's no place for a pushchair, a wheelchair, in actual fact a pedestrian was having trouble," he said.

In reply, engineer for Portlaoise MD Wes Wilkinson said that more wheel stops will be installed at parking bays next to the footpath in Market Square, Abbeyleix.
