Properties hit by heavy rain

Action is needed to redirect floods on a Mountrath road away from residential properties, a Laois councilor insists.

Cllr Conor Bergin, Fine Gael, tabled a motion calling on the Council to address the surface water issues at the Farrell residence, Spa Hill, Mountrath.

He complimented the council on extending the footpath following a campaign by residents but there is an issue at a new house with water lying on the road.

He said council patching had alleviated the problem but the road is ‘out of shape’ resulting in damage to walls from water.

“White walls don’t stay white for long,” he said. He added: “Work needs to be done to stop water going into these residences.”

He was backed by Cllr James Kelly, Independent. He said there is nowhere for the water to flow and there is nowhere for the water to go.

Edmond Kenny, District Engineer, replied that the council would arrange to meet Cllr Bergin at the site to examine the area of concern.

The issue was raised at a recent meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.
