Woman was drunk in Laois park

A suspended sentence was handed down to a woman who was ‘roaring and shouting’ in a public park in Laois.
Ozlet Muwaniri, 36, of 73 Crann Nua, Portarlington admitted being drunk and disorderly at the People’s Park in Portarlington on September 10 last.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said gardai attended a public order incident on the date in question at 10.40pm. He said the defendant was “highly intoxicated” and “roaring and shouting” and slurring her words.
Suzanne Dooner BL said the defendant was pleading guilty to the offences. She said her client had drunk too much and was woken by people in the park who were taunting her.
She said the woman had gone drinking to celebrate being accepted into a business course in Portlaoise.
She said the woman had a lot of difficulty with alcohol but was now doing well and was under the care of two doctors.
Judge Andrew Cody noted the woman was a regular in the court last year having amassed 15 convictions under the public order act in 2022. He said she has three convictions this year.
He sentenced the woman to three months in prison but suspended the sentence for two years.
“There won’t be any more suspended sentences or probation bonds,” Judge Cody warned the woman.
