Calls for urgent foliage cutting in Longford at hazardous overgrown area

"This part of the bypass is in urgent need of attention"
A public representative has called on the local authority to carry out immediate hedge-cutting work in Longford town to address a hazardous overgrown area.
Fianna Fáil Cllr Martin Monaghan outlined in a motion at last week's Longford Municipal District meeting that the footpath needed to be tidied and hedging needed to be cut back between the Red Cow roundabout and the Leo Casey roundabout.
"This part of the bypass is in urgent need of attention and it is probably the most used part of the bypass in Longford," he said. "The footpath is literally one person wide and the overgrowth is huge on it."
Cllr Monaghan said the footpaths are also very dirty due to the overgrowth and a sweeper is needed to clean them.
The motion was seconded by Cllr Uruemu Adejinmi who added she had received complaints from local residents on the Drumlish Road in relation to foliage on the Red Cow roundabout.
"They highlighted the danger of approaching the roundabout and vehicles speeding past because they can't see the vehicles coming out from Longford heading towards Drumlish and they get the fright of their lives when a car suddenly appears," she added.
There was unanimous support for the motion with Cllr Niall Gannon, Cllr Kevin Hussey and Cathaoirleach, Cllr Seamus Butler also backing it.
Senior executive engineer of Longford MD, David McNiff said there was a contract for the national and regional road works carried out in July and August and the bypass was cut during that period.
Mr McNiff said he would contact Transport Infrastructure Ireland to request if it could be cut again and he stated in the meantime the footpaths will be cleaned.
