A disqualified motorist who was caught driving will be assessed by probation services to ascertain if he is a suitable candidate for community service.

Andrei Pascal (31) of 2 The Dolmen, Dunbeggan, Ard na Cliffe, Longford pleaded guilty at the local district court to the offence on December 16, 2024.

Garda Yvonne Glacken said she was on duty in Aughacordrinan, Aughnacliffe when she stopped the defendant at 6.40pm and she requested his driving licence, which he did not have in his possession.

Mr Pascal stated he was not the owner of the car and it was registered in his brother's name.

Garda Glacken made a lawful demand to the defendant to produce his driving licence and his insurance certificate within 10 days, but he failed to do so.

The officer noted the insurance and tax discs had expired and she made further enquiries which confirmed Pascal was disqualified.

The car was seized and the defendant, who had been cooperative, was arrested.

Mr Pascal had several previous convictions.

The court heard the defendant was disqualified from driving for two years on February 9, 2023 at Naas District Court for driving without insurance.

The defendant was also convicted of driving without insurance on January 4, 2022 at Trim District Court.

Solicitor Bríd Mimnagh said her client, a father of four children, worked with a colleague who usually drove him to work, however, his work colleague had been on holiday at the time of the incident.

"He took a chance on driving to work," she added.

Ms Mimnagh said Mr Pascal has been working since he came to Ireland and he contributes to society.

The legal representative said Mr Pascal, who earns up to €2,000 per month and pays €480 in rent, regretted his actions.

Judge Bernadette Owens stated if Mr Pascal is deemed suitable she would impose 180 hours community service in lieu of four months imprisonment.

The case was adjourned until March 18, 2025.
