End of an era as Mercy Sisters to leave south Longford town

June will see the end of an era in Ballymahon as the Mercy Sisters will depart the town following a presence in the community for 151 years.
Similar to many religious congregations who are faced with decreasing numbers and an increasing age profile, Mercy Sisters have to make changes to address the new realities.
The community in Ballymahon has numbered three Sisters for the past couple of years. They will be moving to Athlone and Longford.
The Sisters will leave behind an enduring legacy.
This is perhaps most identifiable in education and in the school that bears their name, Mercy Secondary School.
A less visible part of that legacy is the pastoral care they gave to generations of people in the community – supporting parish activities and initiatives, care of the bereaved and visiting the sick.
They were always on hand to help and support wherever and whenever that was needed.
Shrule parish will host a 'Farewell Gathering' in St Matthew's Church, Ballymahon on Saturday, June 10 with mass at 6pm followed by refreshments.
Parishioners should note that this will replace the 8pm Mass on that evening.
