Gardaí investigating the alleged assault of a woman in her fifties at Longford's Mall complex on Monday are trawling through CCTV footage and appealing for the public's help in a bid to secure a breakthrough into the investigation.

Detectives are hoping those endeavours will throw up vital clues in identifying a male suspect which they believe carried out the attack on the woman during the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday.

As first revealed on the Leader's website on Monday afternoon, gardaí cordoned off a section of the Mall's walkway at the rear of its leisure complex for several hours following the incident.

The female victim, who is local, was taken to Mullingar's Midland Regional Hospital for treatment to what were described as “non-life threatening” injuries in the wake of the attack.

A thorough examination of the scene was also conducted with CCTV in and around The Mall being canvassed over the past 24 hours.

Despite no arrests having yet been made, gardaí are hoping potentially vital eye witness accounts from members of the public will pave the way towards identifying a main suspect in the case.

“Gardaí are investigating an assault which occurred in Longford town in the early hours of Monday 7th August 2023,” said a garda spokesperson.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Longford Garda Station on (043) 3350570, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
