The event is on Saturday, May 27 when Longford Africans Network will host a free event at Longford Slashers GAA Club.
This year’s theme is “Africa: Opportunities in Challenging Times”, and there will be a session titled “Working with the Local Enterprise Office” presented by the Director of Longford County Council Local Enterprise office followed by a panel discussion on business and development opportunities for entrepreneurs and trade partnerships between Ireland and African Countries.
There will also be a recognition of the achievements of Africans in Longford in the areas of Sports, Arts, Community and Business as well as acknowledgement of Irish allies. There will be entertainment by local artists and music on the day.
Africa Day, which falls on Thursday, May 25, celebrates the richness of African cultures and the contribution of people of African descent to Irish life. Africa Day celebrations are organised by Irish Aid at the Department of Foreign Affairs in partnership with African embassies in Ireland and local authorities around the country.
Local elected representative, Cllr Uruemu Adejinmi spoke of the importance of the event: “This year, we are exploring opportunities for trade and partnerships at local and international level, recognising the achievements of Africans in Longford and celebrating our African Heritage.
“Sincere thanks to Irish Aid at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Longford County Council for the continued support and to Longford Slashers GAA for the use of the facilities.”
This year will see Ireland’s largest-ever Africa Day programme, with events being held nationwide.
