Longford County Council are exploring the legalities of a Compulsory Purchase Order on the alley between Main Street and Annaly Park at Longford Courthouse.

Lighting at the alley way between Longford Main Street and the Annaly Park car park adjacent to Longford courthouse was first raised at the November meeting of Longford Municipal District.

At the January meeting of the authority, Cllr Seamus Butler asked if the matter could be progressed: “At the November meeting I proposed the lighting of the Courthouse Alley off Main Street. I am now proposing that the alley be “taken in charge”, using a CPO if necessary.”

Cathaoirleach Martin Monaghan agreed with the proposal saying: “If it's possible we should do it.”

Senior Engineer Eamonn Bennett had previously said there was an issue with taking the alleyway “in charge”, and as the property owner was opposed to such a move.

Director Of Services, John Brannigan, outlined the council's current position: “We have consulted with our law agents with regard to the legalities of doing a CPO on the area in question. He will do a report and bring that back to the council.”
