A man who was alleged to be in an argument with his wife when Gardai intervened will return before Longford District Court in March.

Eduards Griss (46) of 18 Auburn Lodge, Prospect Wood, Longford was charged with engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour on August 31 last.

Sergeant Enda Daly said that the incident occurred at 5:30pm. Sg Daly said when the officers arrived at the Prospect Wood estate they encountered a male in an intoxicated condition.

The prosecution alleged that the defendant was “shouting and acting in an aggressive manner”.

The evidence to the court was that when officers spoke to Mr Griss he became more aggressive. The defendant was arrested and brought to Longford Garda Station.

Solicitor Fiona Baxter said her client was having an argument with his wife when the Gardaí arrived. Ms Baxter said the couple were “going through a difficulty period at the time”.

The solicitor said Mr Griss's wife “gave him an ultimatum” saying: “Either he sort out his issues or she will leave with the two children.”

Ms Baxter said there have been no difficulties since. The solicitor said her client's wife is the main breadwinner and that Mr Griss looks after the children. She added that the family has limited income.

Sg Daly told judge Bernadette Owens that the defendant has three previous convictions; one for possession of knives and is serving a disqualification for no insurance.

Judge Owens remanded the defendant on continuing bail to March 7 at which time there will be a Russian interpreter in court.
