The delays were highlighted at a meeting of the Longford County Council

Delays on the delivery of a wastewater treatment plant to serve Ballymahon were highlighted at the December meeting of Longford County Council.

Cllr Pat O'Toole raised the issue saying planning approval for a 30 house development in Ballymahon had to be halted as the water infrastructure in the area cannot accommodate the increase.

“It looks like Uisce Éireann are backsliding on this in relation to the wastewater treatment plant,” Cllr O'Toole told members,

“In September 2023 they gave a commitment when I met with them, along with Cllr Mick Cahill, to have planning permission in place by quarter two of 2024.

“Now I see the planning permission is not going ahead because the wastewater issues have not been addressed. I would just like that to be noted, and I want to keep this item on the agenda until we get a positive response,” Cllr O'Toole said.

In September of last year the utility company announced plans for the wastewater treatment plants in Ballymahon and Edgeworthstown.

Uisce Éireann said the investment in the plants will benefit the local communities by supporting sustainable growth and development, enhancing water quality, and protecting the environment.
