A Longford man has appeared in court charged with intentionally or recklessly setting off in a chase with another car that created a “substantial risk” or death of serious injury.

Ronan Noone, Ballycloughan, Carrickboy, Longford, was also charged with dangerous driving and drink driving folowing an incident at Toneen, Moydow, Co Longford on November 26 last year. In opening the State's case, Sgt Enda Daly said the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had consented to summary disposal, meaning the case could be disposed of in the District Court. However, he qualified those remarks by saying the DPP would allow the case to run its course at District Court level on a guilty plea only.

In defence, solicitor Frank Gearty asked for a short adjournment to consider his client's approach to the case. “I have had a preliminary meeting with Mr Noone,” he said. The experienced local solicitor confided that a “certain course” would be taken in the “fullness of time”. Judge Miriam Walsh agreed to that request and remanded Mr Noone on continuing bail to a sitting of Longford District Court on January 2, 2024.
