Longford man in court on threat to kill and assault charges

The State have been given a further two weeks to extract forensic evidence in its case against a south Longford man on assault and threat to kill charges.
Paul Boyce (46) Kinard, Legan, Longford is currently on remand in prison charged with false imprisonment, assault and threatening to kill or cause serious harm to a female at Aghnavealoge, Legan on a date unknown between April 1 2023 and April 2 2023.
Sgt Mark Mahon, for the State, said gardaí were still awaiting a report from the Forensic Science Laboratory of Ireland concerning details relating to the alleged case.
He said despite a longer than expected delay, a senior garda has joined the investigation in a bid to fast-track the process.
“I moved it up along the line,” said Sgt Mahon.
“Detective Inspector (John) Costello has taken an interest in the case and it has been given top priority in the forensic science laboratory.”
Sgt Mahon also said a forensic scientist had been appointed to the case.
In defence, solicitor Frank Gearty said his client, who appeared via video link, was appreciative of those comments but said Mr Boyce was eager to secure bail as soon as possible.
“The wheels of an application to the High Court have commenced,” he stated.
A request to adjourn the case for three weeks to Tuesday week (June 6) was agreed to by Mr Gearty.
Judge Bernadette Owens rubber-stamped that order and remanded Mr Boyce in custody, by consent, to a sitting of Longford District Court on June 6.
