A man who became abusive when he was refused service at a hotel bar was fined €200 at Longford District Court.

Patrick Stokes (57) of 21 Dundarragh, Dublin Road, Longford faced two public order charges.

Mr Stokes was charged with public intoxication and engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour at the Longford Arms Hotel on September 24, 2022.

Sergeant Enda Daly said that at 9:50pm on the date of the offence Longford Gardaí received a call from the Longford Arms regarding two males. Hotel staff related details of the incident in which the defendant was told he would not be served because he was intoxicated. Mr Stokes became abusive to the bar staff.

In evidence Sgt Daly described how when officers arrived Mr Stokes was “shouting and using expletives”. The defendant was arrested for engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour.

The court was told Mr Stokes subsequently called to the hotel and the Garda station and apologised for his behaviour on the evening.

The defendant has a number of previous convictions including assault, property damage, and violent disorder. Solicitor John Quinn explained that his client had “too much to drink on the night”.

Mr Quinn told the court his client is not working at present and in receipt of a Social Welfare payment.

Taking the facts of the case into consideration Judge Bernadette Owens registered a conviction and imposed a fine of €200 with five months to pay.
