Longford turns clock back to 1930s for traditional High Nelly Cycle in Kenagh

All eyes will be on Kenagh village in just over a week’s time as it plays host to an age-old fundraiser with a difference.
Final preparations are being put in place for a 10km Family Fun Cycle in aid of Kenagh Tidy Towns (Kenagh District Development Association) this Sunday, June 25.
In a bid to add extra intrigue to the occasion, organisers have decided to go with a High Nelly theme and are encouraging participants to don their finest traditional regalia on the day.
“It is the first year we are having it and though we have had other cycles before, we are going with a High Nelly run to add a bit of a twist to it,” said committee member Brian Egan.
“If you are taking part in the High Nelly run, we are hoping as many people as possible dress up in 1930s period dress.”
Paul Rhatigan, manager at Benetti Menswear in Ballymahon, will be the judge for that part of the event with prizes being handed out for the best dressed man or woman.
“Paul is the local high nelly enthusiast and we are hoping people will come out on the day and support the event,” the committee member added.
Benetti Menswear are the sponsors for the High Nelly part of the event with 2 Mugs Coffee holding down the role as the event’s main sponsors.
It all gets underway with registration pencilled in for midday from Gav’s Bar car park ahead of the cycle itself getting under starter’s orders at 1pm.
The event is open to all ages and organisers have arranged shorter distances for children and walkers.
Entry fees are €10 per person or €20 per family with a barbeque taking place at O’Boyle’s following the cycle.
