Longford's DB Men's Shed in bid to save the planet

Repair Cafe: Championing sustainability for the community, the environment and the pocket
The circular economy is coming to Drumlish. Small steps towards saving the planet from a looming environmental disaster are the incentive for a repair or recreate cafe.
The Repair Cafe is a community collaboration between Drumlish Ballinamuck Men’s Shed and three other groups.
Run in conjunction with the local Tidy Towns, the EDI Centre and REVAMP Longford this event is dedicated to fixing broken items, saving money and reducing waste by learning new skills, and contributing to a more sustainable lifestyle.
Breda Murphy is Social Enterprise Manager with EDI Centre Longford: “We all have to do our part to repair, reuse, recycle and up cycle. This is about bringing it to the community, making people aware of the importance of the circular economy and how easily it can be done.”
The Repair Cafe champions sustainability, offering a practical solution that benefits the community, the environment and the pocket. Promoting the principles of reduce, reuse, and repair, the cafe aims to create a more sustainable community.
“In today’s fast-paced, throwaway culture, it’s easy to discard broken items and buy new ones,” Breda says, “This can save people money. There has been a fall in disposable income. This offers a practical solution and one that helps the environment.”
The event will feature a range of skills to this end. Sewing, furniture and bike and small household appliance repair will be part of the cafe's offering. Upcycled paint and furniture painting, live art, portrait sketching and the preventing food waste will be discussed on the day. Other topics will include biodiversity and the importance of our bees.
The cafe will take place on Thursday June 27, from 10:30am to 3:30pm at the Men’s Shed in Drumlish.“The team will make repair process, fun and educational.
“Whether it’s sewing a patch, tightening a screw, or diagnosing an electrical problem, they will cover it all. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable knowledge from our expert, connect with like-minded community members and help our Environment by reducing waste and become more sustainable,” Breda said.
