Man fined after Longford estate ‘confrontation’

A Lithuanian man who was found in the grips of a confrontation with a third party at an estate in Longford town before becoming “aggressive and belligerent” with gardaí has been fined €300.
Evaldus Palijanskas (27) 36 The Mill, Clondra, Co Longford, was convicted of engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour at last week’s District Court sitting following an incident at Palace Drive, Ardnacassa, Longford on June 4, 2023.
Sgt Conor McShane, for the State, said gardaí had been called to the estate to attend an incident and immediately came across Mr Palijanskas caught up in a “confrontation” in the middle of the street.
He said Mr Palijanskas initially indicated to gardaí of being the alleged injured party and quickly became “aggressive and belligerent” to gardaí.
That, he said, resulted in Mr Palijanskas’ arrest, something Sgt McShane said was also motivated by how “extremely drunk” he was.
It was further revealed that the accused had 17 previous convictions to his name.
Speaking through an interpreter, Mr Palijanskas said his actions, while disproportionate, were driven by genuine intentions.
“I would like to apologise to the court and gardaí for what I done,” he said, before referring to the aforementioned incident.
“I wanted to help the lady and the child in the conflict."
Judge Bernadette Owens fined Mr Palijanskas €300 for the threatening and abusive behaviour charge, giving him four months to pay.
An accompanying public intoxication charge was taken into consideration.
