Pensioner charged with assaulting and threatening to kill daughter in Longford

A pensioner has been charged with producing a knife, assaulting his daughter and threatening to kill or cause serious ham to her.
The man, who cannot be indentified on the basis it would identify the alleged victim, stands accused of carrying out a section 3 assault, a less serious section 2 assault and producing a large knife during the course of a dispute at an address in Co Longford on April 29, 2022.
The man, who was not in attendance in court at last week's District Court sitting owing to ill-health, was also charged with criminal damage and of threatening to kill or cause serious harm to his daughter at the same location.
The latter charge, on summary conviction in the District Court carries a maximum tariff of 12 months in prison or up to ten years on conviction in the Circuit Court.
Defending, Frank Gearty said his client had previously come before Judge John Brennan where details of the case were heard and jurisdiction was ruled upon.
He said the accused was not in a position to attend court last Tuesday after a concerned neighbour contacted him to say he was not physically well enough to attend in person.
Judge Owens accepted that submission and adjourned the case to a sitting of Longford District Court on January 10, 2023.
