While no changes are proposed, the final decision will be confirmed in the November budget meeting of Longford County Council

Longford County Council’s executive has proposed that no changes be made to the property tax for thousands of householders across the county.

Delivering a presentation at a recent meeting of Longford County Council, Director of Finance John McKeon told the chamber that the final decision on this matter would be made by the elected members at the council’s budget meeting in November.

The meeting heard there were currently 18,298 Longford Local Property Tax Payers (i.e. householders).

Mr McKeon said, “95% of those payers pay less than €5.20 a week and 77% payers pay €2.10 a week there. We propose we keep it like that."

He added, “The local property tax, in our commitment there, our current yield is €360,000 per annum. If we did vary it upwards, there would be another €240,000 or so for this year … that would be the yield from now on to 2030, an extra million as well.”

"Thankfully we don't need to burden the local property owners with that at this point because of the strategic business plan and how our other funding streams are being utilised.”
