Longford District Court hears that the Book of Evidence has been served on the defendant

A teenager who is accused of sexually assaulting a young girl has been sent forward for trial at Longford Circuit Court next month.

The 18 year-old has been charged with two counts of sexual assault, the first of which allegedly occurred on April 4 at a location in county Longford last year.

The defendant is accused and has been charged with a second sexual assault at the same location but “on an occasion other than” the initial charge.

Garda Reilly took the stand and said the Book of Evidence had been served on the defendant and the statutory declaration of service has been completed.

Sgt Enda Daly confirmed they had received directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for the defendant to be sent forward to stand trial in Longford Circuit Court and appear on Tuesday, July 15.

Judge Bernadette Owens told the accused that she was sending him forward for trial in Dublin, and she gave him the ‘alibi warning’.

Solicitor Anthony Feeney, defending, applied for legal aid and he applied for two counsels due to the "gravity of the offences". Judge Owens remanded the defendant on bail subject to the same strict conditions.

The conditions included signing on twice every week at Granard Garda Station, to observe a 10pm to 6am curfew, to live at his home address, to have no contact with the alleged injured party and he was also directed to stay away from a named housing estate in Edgeworthstown.
