The onset of next year’s local elections was in rich evidence last week as two Fine Gael councillors exchanged light-hearted differences of opinion over the geography of Longford town.

The jovial spat between Cllrs Peggy Nolan and Gerry Hagan came after the former called for the council to step in over parking concerns along the Bannon Terrace area of town.

However, it was when Cllr Nolan also referenced how the issue also concerned 'Congress Terrace', that Cllr Hagan said his party colleague was mistaken.

“It’s not Congress Terrace, it’s Templemichael Terrace,” he said. “I don’t live in the town but I know that.”

Cllr Nolan said while she took on board what her “cherished” Killoe based local politician was stating, she said her inadvertent slip was down to “important” work she had been doing earlier in the day for constituents living in Congress Terrace.

“On a point of information, I was working very diligently before I came into this meeting on issues pertaining to residents in Congress Terrace and that is how I got it mixed up. It should have been Templemichael Terrace but I done the business for Congress Terrace before the meeting,” she pointedly remarked.

“Thank you very much Cllr and let me tell you I know the townlands (of Longford Municipal District) inside out.”

That led Cllr Hagan to comically ask Cllr Nolan: “Your still running then?

Meanwhile, Cllr Hagan received assurances the council would re-establish the county town's current compliment of loading bays either towards the latter end of 2023 or early in the new year subject to funding.
