Tributes paid following death of retired Longford funeral director

Tributes have been paid to the much-respected retired funeral director, Christy Donnelly, following the passing over the weekend.

Christy, formerly of Chapel St, Longford, passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family in Mullingar Regional Hospital on Saturday, September 5.

He is predeceased by his parents, brothers Eddie and James and his sister-in-law Mary Hayes.

Christy will be sadly missed by his wife and best friend Kathleen, son Paul, daughters Christine and Cathie, his grandchildren whom he treasured Niall, Emma, Gary and Aaron, brothers Pat, Johnny and Michael, and sister Kitty (Allen). Christy will also be remembered by his wonderful friends and neighbours.

Paying tribute, a friend described him as “a true gentleman” adding that it weas “so sad to see the passing of a member of one of the oldest and most respected families in the town.”

An acquaintance reflected on the “lovely memories of times past how Christy entertained with his stories” while another spoke of him being “a great character”, recalling “he was always great company and always a great pleasure meeting him.”

Christy will be reposing in Connell's Funeral Home, Church St, Longford, N39KN66 on Wednesday September 9 from 6 o'clock concluding with prayers at 8 o'clock.

Family home strictly private at all times.

Funeral Mass for Christy will take place on Thursday September 10 at 11 o'clock in St Mel's Cathedral, Longford.

Following Mass, Christy will be laid to rest in the family plot in Ballymacormack Cemetery. Mass can be viewed live here.
