Birr to face neighbours Roscrea in the semi-final on Sunday next

Senior Women

Congratulations to the Birr RFC Senior Women’s team who defeated Garda in the first round of the Leinster Division 5 Cup in Westmanstown on a scoreline of 10-17 on Sunday week last. Special mention to Chloe Walsh who recently made her debut against Roscrea and Sarah McGarry who made her debut against Garda. Both played a major effort in the match. They will now progress to the semi-finals against Roscrea RFC at home on Sunday April 7th at 1pm in Birr.

This is the first year that Birr have fielded a senior women’s team and it has proved to be a highly successful addition to the club with many former youth players returning to join the team in addition to a number of women who have taken up the oval ball for the first time. Having finished 4th in the Leinster League division they now have a number of cup matches left in the season and would encourage anyone with an interest in playing to call down and give it a go.

The club would like to thank sponsors The Ormond Clubhouse and Athenry Credit Union for their continued support throughout the season.

Senior Men

The Birr RFC Senior Men, sponsored by Bloomdale Construction, finished up their Leinster League campaign with a strong 29-8 win at home to Midlands Warriors on Sunday March 25th. Having lost a number of matches during the season by narrow margins you could see the improvement as the season progressed.

Tries scored by Gary Baker (2), Reuben Noyce (1), a penalty try from a dominant scrum, and two conversions and a penalty from Brendan Heffernan sealed the deal. Congrats to Simon Eades who was named player of the match.

Youths

Congratulations to the U-16 girls on their 17-44 win away to Wolves in the Leinster League Division 3 semi-final and condolences to the U-14 Boys who lost away to a strong Barnhall team in their Leinster Cup quarter final.

While the U-17 & U-18 boys teams have finished up for the season, there are still a number of matches to be played by the other youths teams in the Leinster or Midlands Cup over the next few weeks.

Minis

The Birr RFC minis, sponsored by Precision Construction, are nearing the end of the season however that didn’t stop them having another busy weekend with some team training at the club and others playing blitzes in Portloaise, Edenderry and Portumna.

It has been a great, albeit wet, season for the minis who continue to grow in numbers all the time.
