A man who verbally abused Gardai in Tullamore was before the January 17 sitting of Tullamore Court.

Stephen Coughlin of Brackloon, Eyrecourt, Co. Galway pleaded guilty to intoxication in public and threatening behaviour.

The offences occurred on December 23, 2023 at Bridge Street, Tullamore. The court was told that on December 23 the Gardai “got a call about an abusive male at a pub in the town. When they arrived at the scene they saw the defendant stumbling and noted he had a strong smell of alcohol. He verbally abused the Guards, calling them f***king w***ers and pigs.”

The defending solicitor Donal Farrelly said his client is 23 years of age and is single, and works with a company in Birr.

“On the evening in question he was with a friend who started making a nuisance of himself. The Guards were called. When they arrived and began talking to his friend my client started videoing them on his phone. He realises now that he shouldn’t have done that.”

Judge Andrew Cody ordered that Mr Coughlin pay €1,000 to the Midlands Simon Community.
