Gardai suspect arson after a fire at a derelict house in Offaly.

The derelict house in Shinrone could have been burned to the ground recently if it hadn't been for the quick reaction of the emergency services.

Last Thursday, October 5 at 5.15am, Gardaí were called to the house on the village's main street. When they arrived they saw that the fire was contained to an upstairs room but it could break out.

The fire brigade also attended and the fire was put out before it extended beyond the upstairs room.

A Garda spokesperson told the Midland Tribune that the house suffered some structural damage.

"Crime Scene Examiners also attended the scene," he said. "We believe that this was an act of criminal damage, or arson."
