Government miss affordable purchase home delivery target in Offaly

SINN Féin's Aoife Masterson, has accused the Government of ‘abjectly failing to address the affordable housing crisis’.

The Sinn Fein representatives comments were made in response to the publication of the government's affordable housing delivery figures for 2025, which showed that they missed their affordable purchase delivery target by 55%.

Cllr Masterson said: “Last week the Department of Housing published the final affordable housing delivery figures for 2025. Buried beneath the smoke and mirrors of the Ministers press release is a very stark reminder that Government is abjectly failing to address the affordable housing rises.

“Just 935 affordable purchase homes were delivered by government in 2025. That is 55% below the promised target of 2,100 affordable purchase homes. And, of course, a significant number of these homes are not affordable to the vast majority of people coming in with an open market value of up to €500,000.

“The government also marginally missed their cost rental target for last year, delivering 2,295 of a promised 2,350 cost rental homes. Local Authorities delivered just 247 of these and the LDA delivered just 508. Given that the LDA has been in operation since 2018, its 2025 delivery is deeply disappointing.

“This does not bode well for the proposed Affordable Housing Scheme in Tullamore which is still very much in the infancy of its planning stage.

"Of course, more fundamentally, neither the cost rental nor the affordable purchase targets are anywhere close to what is needed.

“Government should be funding and delivering an average of 10,000 affordable homes every year, split evenly between cost rental and genuinely affordable purchase. Their failure to do this is actively contributing to the ever-deepening affordable housing crisis.”
