Shane led the Open after two rounds but slipped back to finish in sixth place at Royal Troon

Shane Lowry has shared a classy message with fans after his disappointing finish to the Open championship at Royal Troon at the weekend.

Shane led the Open after two rounds but slipped back to finish in sixth place at Royal Troon. American Xander Schauffele finished strongly to claim the title.

Following his final round on Sunday, where Lowry briefly got back into contention, the Clara man posted: "The greatest walk in golf and I got to do it for the last 4 days. There is nothing like the buzz of being in the hunt at The Open at the weekend. Gutted I didn’t do better but thanks everyone for their support. It doesn’t go unnoticed. Well done @xanderschauffele. Roll on Paris."

Lowry's next big outing on the golf course will be in Paris when he lines out in the green of Ireland at the Olympics alongside Rory McIlroy.
