COUNCILLOR Tony McCormack asked if Tullamore should look at painting murals on the side of some of the buildings in the town, at the February meeting of Tullamore Municipal District.

''We have many talented artists right across the county and many buildings. Is it something we could bring to the council to give our buildings a lift?'' he asked.

The subject of murals on buildings can be controversial. Some people love them others hate them.

Public murals need planning permission. They can enhance a building or make it ugly depending on the artist and the subject matter.

In 2022 a householder in Sandycove was ordered to remove a mural of two ballerina boxers from the front of her home. The owner Cathy McGovern was forced to paint over what many believed were great murals of two ballerinas wearing boxing gloves painted by street artist Solus.

The woman appealed to An Bord Pleanala and had estate agents confirm it would not devalue her property but her appeal was turned down.

Some of the best street art in Ireland can be seen in Dublin and Galway.
