Guilty plea at Tullamore District Court to drug possession nearly a year ago could trigger imposition of three-month jail term for previous conviction

A MAN is to appear before Tullamore District Court on November 4 in connection with the possible activation of a suspended prison sentence.

The imposition of a three-month suspended sentence will be considered by the court in the case of Jason O'Connor (31), Chancery Close, Tullamore after he admitted possession of cannabis in Tullamore on November 12 last year.

Sergeant Justine Reilly told Judge Andrew Gubbins the value of the cannabis was €40 and Mr O'Connor had five previous convictions, including one from 2025 which carried a three-month prison sentence and had been suspended for two years.

Aisling Maloney, defending solicitor, said Mr O'Connor had “put his hands up” and entered an early guilty plea to the offence he committed on November 12.

Ms Maloney said her client had addiction issues but had told her he was off cannabis for six-and-a-half weeks.

A man with underlying mental health difficulties, he was dealing with his addiction himself but would attend the Community Alcohol and Drugs Service (CADS).

Judge Gubbins fined Mr O'Connor €200 and imposed a one-month sentence but suspended it for six months on condition he be of good behaviour and attend CADS.

He said the question of activating the previously suspended sentence would be considered by the court on November 4.
