Offaly man makes big breakthrough win at Ferbane 5k

There was a festival feeling in the air in Ferbane this weekend as the Offaly running community descended on West Offaly for Ferbane AC’s Hugo Smith Memorial 5K on Sunday 18 May.

The race was round 5 of the Healthy Offaly 5K Series and with three events remaining there’s little sign of participant interest abating. The very warm sunny conditions that have been experienced nationwide for the past few weeks continued in Ferbane. The heat may have been challenging for some runners, but good hydration was the order of the day making it a day to savour by all. Congratulations to Ferbane Athletic Club on a wonderful event which was superbly organised from start to finish.

The winner of the men’s race was Kevin Minnock, Tullamore Harriers. It was a big win for the Cappincur man and his time of 15:31 brought him home just three seconds ahead of his nearest challenger Peter Somba who ran 15:34 to give us an exciting and close finish.

In the women’s race Denise Egan took 1st place for the host club Ferbane AC in a very impressive 18:23. Well done to Ferbane AC on hosting another successful event and sincere thanks to all the clubs who turned out in such numbers to support the race. Next up is the Offaly Outdoor Track and Field Championships taking place in the Tullamore Harriers facility on Thursday 22 May at 7pm. Elsewhere, the Ballyskenagh AC 5K will take place on Friday 30 May at 8pm. Please come and support these events.
