An Offaly woman was fined for being drunk and abusive in Portlaoise.

Orelette Carne (45), Tara Crescent, Tullamore, Co Offaly was arrested on Main Street in Portlaoise on February 18 last.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said gardai were dealing with another incident on the night when a highly intoxicated and agitated female pushed past gardai and shouted at a doorman. He said the incident occurred at 2.40am. Sgt Kirby said the defendant has two previous convictions dating back to 2006.

Solicitor Philip Meagher said his client had been at a family function with her partner on the night in question. He said the woman’s partner was being prevented from going back into a premises to get his coat.

Mr Meagher said the defendant was apologetic and had written a letter of apology to gardai.

“She would say she normally doesn’t drink,” said Mr Meagher.

He told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court that his client suffers from depression and anxiety.

“She assures the court it will never happen again,” he added.

Judge Andrew Cody imposed a €300 fine for being abusive and the public intoxication charge was taken into account.
