Plans for new car park in Offaly rejected due to public safety concerns

Plans for a new car park in Offaly have been rejected by Offaly County Council due to a number of public safety concerns.

Kilcormac Development Association had sought permission for a change of use from storage yard to a car park on Main Street, Kilcormac that would have included charging points for electric vehicles and two disabled parking places.

Recent street works in Kilcormac have restricted the number of parking places available on the Main Street in the town.

However the plans for a new car park adjacent to J Grennans and Sons in the town have been rejected by Offaly County Council.

The council gave five reasons for rejecting the plans with five pertaining to public safety concerns and two pertaining to drainage from the site.

In its decision the council says that the development did not meet standards with regard to the provision of suitable footpaths and as such would therefore endanger public safety. placeholder image

The council also stated that the application had failed to demonstrate that safe turning of delivery vehicles could occur within the site and also said that the plans failed to demonstrate that suitable sight visibility distances at the entrance could be provided. It said this would endanger public safety and would also be an obstruction to road users.

The council also had concerns over drainage from the site stating that the proposal to discharge surface water into the existing combined sewer on Main Street was 'not permissable'.
