Thousands of people have descended on the Butterfield Estate near Blueball for the Tullamore Show and FBD National Livestock Show.

The crowds piled into the showgrounds in droves after the gates officially opened to visitors from 8.30 am onwards.

Among the early birds was Fine Gael MEP Maria Walsh, accompanied by local councillor Neil Feighery, who said she looked forward to another successful event.

Also present was the Minister for Agriculture, Charlie McConalogue who highlighted the importance of farm safety at the official opening of the Farm Safety Live event.

The Minister will perform the official opening of the show at 12.30 pm on the main stand.

A huge array of competitions and events take place during the day and many new attractions, including a hot air balloon display, have been introduced.
