Suspended prison sentence for Offaly man who tried to headbutt parked car
An Offaly man was charged with a number of public order offences during the June 26 sitting of Tullamore District Court.
Before the court was Lorcan Dunican, 14 Frankford Park, Kilcormac. He committed the offences on April the 26th, 2024, on Main Street Kilcormac.
Sergeant Richard Thornton told the court that Mr Dunican ran out in front of a Garda patrol car as it was driving through the town. When the Guards got out of the car and approached Dunican he was “very agitated and aggressive. He threatened the Gardaí and told them to f*** off. He then tried to headbutt a parked car nearby.”
The Sergeant added that the defendant had three previous convictions, all for public order offences.
The charges against him on this occasion were failing to comply with a Guard's direction and engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour; and failing to provide a Guard with a name and address.
The defending solicitor Patrick Martin said his client had consumed alcohol which reacted badly with his medication for ADHD.
“When he drinks he can get into difficulties,” remarked the solicitor. “He is 20 years of age and is on a disability allowance of €230 per week. He lives at home with his parents. I would ask you to please be as lenient as possible.”
“We can be thankful,” commented the Judge, “that he headbutted the car and not a Garda.”
He convicted and sentenced to one month in prison, suspended for two years.
