Suspended sentence for man who smashed windows of cars in Offaly

A defendant pleaded guilty to causing €1,700 damage to two cars in Edenderry during the March 15 sitting of Tullamore District Court.
William McBride, 19 Fairgreen, Edenderry was charged with committing the offence at 12A Greenwood Park, Edenderry on March 18, 2021 when he “smashed the rear passenger window of an Opel Saloon, causing €200 of damage,” and he “smashed the front window and both passenger windows of a Ford Focus, causing €1500 of damage.”
The defending solicitor Donal Farrelly told the court that his client was pleading guilty.
Sgt James O’Sullivan outlined that the crime happened at three in the morning.
“A sample of blood was taken at the scene,” said the Sergeant, “and this blood was linked to the defendant. The defendant has nine previous convictions, including three public order offences and six road traffic matters.”
Mr Farrelly pointed out that the offences happened two years ago and his client hasn’t come to the attention of the Gardaí since.
“He was very intoxicated at the time. My client is 23 years of age. He is unemployed and has a very limited income. There was a terrible tragedy in his family just a few weeks ago and he tells me that he is not in a good mental space at the moment and is feeling suicidal himself."
Judge Andrew Cody convicted and sentenced the defendant to three months imprisonment, suspending the sentence for a period of three years.
