Mercedes-AMG launches new entry to GT 4-Door Coupe range

Lower-powered electric model follows on from range-topping ‘63’ model.
Mercedes-AMG may have only launched its electric GT 4-Door Coupe in May, but it has already added to the range with a lower-powered, entry-level model.
Called the Mercedes-AMG GT 53 4-Door Coupe, the new model falls underneath the range-topping 63 version.
Whereas the high-powered 63 uses three electric motors as standard, the 53 has two to develop 544bhp, down from 1,180bhp in the flagship model.

Despite this, the GT 53 will still go from 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds – slightly more than the two seconds it’ll take the 63 to do the same sprint. It’ll go on to a top speed of 143mph, or 155mph with an optional AMG Driver’s Package.
The GT 53 also gets 4Matic all-wheel-drive and Ride Control suspension which blends air springs and adaptive damping to give the best-possible ride. It can also be controlled via the ‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport+’ driving modes.
Mercedes-AMG claims that the GT 53 will be able to travel up to 497 miles on a single charge, while a maximum charge speed of up to 600kW means that up to 311 miles of range could be added in ten minutes.

As with the 63, the new GT 53 gets a unique exterior sound which, in this instance, mimics the exhaust note from one of the brand’s petrol-powered six-cylinder models. Originally captured by recording sound from both inside and outside a combustion-powered car, the sound is linked to the dynamics of the car. Manual ‘gearchanges’ can also be simulated and are accompanied by a sound equivalent to changing gears in a petrol car.
Inside, the GT 53 combines the driver’s display and main infotainment under one seemingly constant sheet of glass while above sits a new Sky Control panoramic glass roof which can be switched from transparent to opaque at the touch of a button.
The Mercedes-AMG GT 53 has gone on sale in the UK priced from £120,095, undercutting the GT 63’s £159,870 starting price.
