Mercedes-AMG updates GLE63 and GLS63 models with new engine

Latest 4.0-litre V8 is designed to offer better efficiency than outgoing setup.
Mercedes-AMG has breathed new life into its GLE63 and GLS63 performance SUVs with a new powertrain.
As before, both cars get a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, but this setup has been updated to help it deliver better efficiency alongside the same performance.
Key to this update is a new flat-plane crankshaft which helps the engine to rev more smoothly and responsively, while a new particulate filter means that both cars will continue to meet stringent emissions standards.

A new mild-hybrid system ensures the best possible power delivery and can help to provide an extra boost of power at low revs. It also helps recover energy that would otherwise be lost when slowing down.
The good news is that despite these changes, both cars still develop 604bhp and can get an additional 23bhp from the mild-hybrid system during heavy acceleration. It enables the GLE63 to go from 0-60mph in 3.6 seconds, or 3.9 seconds in the slightly larger GLS63.

On the outside, both cars benefit from updated front grilles with larger air intakes for better engine cooling. At the rear, the exhaust is now more prominent, with the newly-developed system utilising a valve control system which can tweak the sound depending on the driving mode selected. In Comfort, for instance, it’ll be relatively quiet while in Sport+ the valves open to deliver the most amount of sound possible.
Both cars also get air suspension as standard with adaptive damping, allowing drivers to firm up or soften off the ride of each model depending on the road surface or activity. In ‘Trail’ modes, both cars can be lifted by up to 55mm for off-road driving, for example.
Mercedes is expected to release full specification details and pricing for the GLE63 and GLS63 soon.
