Gardaí have been conducting nationwide speed checks as part of National Slow Down Day, and have checked the speed of over 37,000 vehicles.

A driver has been caught travelling 128kmh in a 100kmh zone as part of National Slow Down Day.

National Slow Down Day is a Garda operation reminding drivers to comply with the speed limits.

In the first five hours of National Slow Down Day, GoSafe checked the speeds of 37,777 vehicles, and detected 68 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

These figures are based on GoSafe detections only. They will be higher with An Garda Síochána personnel detections, which are not available at the moment.

A driver was caught speeding 94km/h in a 60km/h zone on the N4 between Drishoge and Carrick-On-Shannon in Roscommon. Another driver was detected going 113km/h in a 80km/h zone on the R245 near Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

Another motorist that was found travelling 127km/h in a 100km/h zone was caught by Gardaí on the N22 in Kerry.

Other notable speeds include 106km/h in a 80km/h zone on the R512 in Limerick, 128km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N4 near Mullingar, Co Westmeath, and 124km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N22 between Gortatlea and Tralee, Co Kerry.

As of this afternoon, a total of 147 people lost their lives on Irish roads this year, with two lives lost in November. It means that, on average, someone has been killed on our roads once every two days this year.

Gardaí continue to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits to reduce the number of speed-related collisions.
