Big win for Carlow as walking trails get boost with €180k funding for outdoor projects

Carlow's outdoor amenities are set to receive a major boost, with almost €180,000 in new funding announced for local recreation projects.

The funding was confirmed by Minister Dara Calleary as part of a national €16.5 million package for 63 outdoor projects, which will support improvements to trails, cycleways, and public amenities across the country, including €177,741 earmarked for the Deerpark/Johns Hill project in Carlow.

The investment forms part of the Government's Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) for 2024/2025, the largest to date, bringing total allocations under the scheme to more than €24.7 million.

Local Fianna Fáil TD Peter "Chap" Cleere said the funding represents "a real investment in our communities," adding that outdoor amenities "are at the heart of local life and provide vital recreational and social spaces."

He said continued maintenance and investment are key to ensuring Carlow's walking and cycling routes remain safe and welcoming.

"Outdoor spaces such as walking trails and cycleways need regular maintenance so that we can continue to enjoy them with our friends and loved ones. They do not remain perfect on their own and require continued investment and care," he said.

"This funding will ensure that these facilities remain in excellent condition throughout the year. They are places where communities gather and connect, and it is essential that we protect and sustain them so they can be enjoyed for generations to come."

The Deputy added that the new investment would "further enhance these amenities, encouraging more people to use them and helping to strengthen community life."

Across Carlow and Kilkenny combined, the total investment exceeds €1 million, with €439,425 allocated to the Brandon Hill project in neighbouring Kilkenny.

Deputy Cleere said the announcement was also an opportunity to celebrate the region's natural beauty and community spirit.

"This is a great opportunity to remind everyone of the wonderful outdoor amenities we have here in Carlow and Kilkenny. We should make the most of them and continue to cherish them. This funding will help ensure that many more people can enjoy these spaces for years to come.”
