Investigations ongoing following arrest at official opening of new Brian Boru Bridge in Killaoe

Investigations are ongoing following an incident which occurred during the official opening of the new Brian Boru bridge which connects the twin towns of Killaloe and Ballina. 

In an official statement issued, a garda spokesperson confirmed they attended the scene of a public gathering at Killaloe, County Clare on Thursday, May 22 2025 at approximately 4pm - around an hour after the opening ceremony began.

A woman, aged in her 30s, who was arrested for public order offences has since been released without charge.

During the course of the ceremony, a protest in support of Palestine was taking place on the Killaloe side of the bridge within earshot of the official ceremony which took place on the new bridge.

Gardaí were present at both sides of the bridge blocking members of the public from entering the bridge for the duration of the ceremony.

The group of protesters were shouting "Darragh O'Brien, you can't hide, you're supporting genocide" among other protest statements.

The Minister for Transport 'cut the ribbon' to mark the official opening of the Brian Boru Bridge.
