LIMERICK City and County Council has revealed a target start-date for works to build a new playground in the People's Park.

The local authority has put in place a contractor to construct the new facilities and a potential start date of June has been identified.

The information, from director of service Nuala O'Connell came following a motion from Social Democrats councillor Elisa O'Donovan.

Speaking at this month's metropolitan meeting she urged that work on the project begin "without delay".

"Thirteen months ago, I was told work would begin in March and work would finish by the end of 2022. It came up on my Facebook memories in February, and I was so mortified to be sitting here a year later after having announced this would be done last year, yet still there's been no movement on the playground. All of here committed funding towards the upgrade of the People's Park playground. We've seen the Castletroy playground upgraded, but no movement here. We have thousands of families living in the city centre who have absolutely no access to gardens - a lot of them live in apartments and their only space is the People's Park and that playground," she said.

The current playground is in a "state of disrepair", Cllr O'Donovan added.

Metropolitan district leader Cllr Olivia O'Sullivan backed the motion, as did her Fine Gael colleague, Cllr Daniel Butler and it was formally seconded by Labour's Conor Sheehan.

Upon hearing the target start-date, Cllr O'Donovan said: "That is brilliant news. I'm really looking forward to it - we've got a date, so thanks."

Cllr O'Sullivan said she hopes that the upgrade works planned for another park mired in delay, O'Brien's Park, will also be delivered this summer.
