A 27-year-old man who had 'horrific difficulties with some of the most serious and dangerous drugs known to man' has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today after he appeared on a series of drug charges.
The man was granted anonymity due to the general threat existing in the city.
He was charged with possessing Xanax with intent to supply on January 27 and possessing drugs on the same date.
He was also charged with possessing cannabis on the same date.
The man was further charged with being concerned in the offer to supply Xanax on dates between December 10 last year and January 22 this year as well as offering to supply Pregablin between December and January.
A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.
The court was told that police were conducting a search of the defendant's home at 9.30am on January 27.
In a bedroom they found cannabis resin and in a coat pocket they found 680 suspected Xanax tablets.
A mobile phone was seized and messages were said to have been found offering to supply Diazepam, Xanax and Pregablin to others.
At interview he admitted possessing the cannabis and X claiming he used the drugs to 'help him sleep'.
As regards the messages on the phone he said he would have supplied people 'as a favour' especially people who had done him a favour in the past.
Bail was opposed due to the risk of re-offending and the officer said police believed that the man would continue to offend.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said his client had addiction issues but had come through worse with more dangerous drugs.
He said as regards the phone messages 'people who do drugs know other people who do drugs.'
The solicitor said the man had 'spoken freely to police.'
District Judge Barney McElholm said that this was the man's third breach and noted that on the last occasion on December 13 he had been given a final warning.
He remanded him in custody to appear again on February 23.
