'Our public sector workers play a vital role and should be entitled to expect a fair pay settlement' - Cllr Jackson
Derry City and Strabane District Council is to discuss a motion in support of public sector pay claims.
The motion is being proposed by Cllr Christopher Jackson (Sinn Féin) who is calling on Council to back fair pay settlements for striking public sector workers.
Cllr Jackson's motion states: "That this Council recognises the overwhelming vote by the Fire Brigades Union in favour of strike action as part of the campaign to secure a fair pay rise.
"Council extends solidarity to our firefighters and all other public sector sector workers including healthcare, education, postal and civil service staff currently engaged in industrial action and calls on employers to engage constructively with trade union representatives towards a resolution that provides for a fair pay settlement for all staff."
Cllr Jackson said: “I believe it’s important that Council extends solidarity to all public sector workers currently engaged in industrial action to secure a fair pay settlement.
“This includes healthcare, education, postal and civil service staff while firefighters have also recently voted in favour of strike action, although that has now been postponed while a new pay offer is consulted on.
“All our public sector workers play a vital role and should be entitled to expect a fair pay settlement, particularly in the face of the Cost of Living crisis.
“My motion calls on employers to engage constructively with trade union representatives towards a resolution that provides for a fair pay settlement for all staff and I very much hope that all parties can support that and demonstrate our appreciation for these essential workers.”
