Councillor Shaun Harkin
People Before Profit said it will 'vigorously campaign' against the removal of free public transport for over-60s.
Foyleside councillor, Shaun Harkin said: "This is a regressive proposal and we encourage the strongest possible response to the 12-week Department for Infrastructure concessionary fares consultation.
"The cost of living crisis continues and many people, particularly older members of our communities have been made worse off.
"Across Europe countries are experimenting with providing free public transport.
"Access to free public transport is good for the environment. It reduces congestion on our roads and reduces emissions causing dirty air.
"It tackles social alienation, allowing people to get out of their homes, connect with family and friends. This is particularly true for rural areas.
"Instead of eliminating free public transport for over-60s we should be finding ways to expand free travel to wider numbers of people.
"PBP backs the SmartPass Equality Campaign (SPEC) calling for free travel for disabled people, who presently qualify only for a half-fare SmartPass. We also support a companion pass for disabled people unable to travel alone.
"Protecting and extending public transport access should be a priority to increase inclusion, reduce inequality and tackle the climate crisis.
"It's nonsense to claim we can't afford it when corporations are posting record profits and government tax receipts are bulging.
"We say tax billionaires and leave the bus pass users alone."
