Derry charity encourages men to prioritise mental and physical health

Seven high risk ratings in Sligo/Leitrim mental health centre

A local charity is encouraging men to prioritise their mental and physical health during Men's Health Week (12-18 June 2023).

Men’s Action Network, a leading advocate for men's health, is urging men across the community to participate in Men's Health Week, an annual initiative that promotes mental and physical well-being.

This year, the campaign aims to empower men to seek the support they need to transform their lives and make a positive impact within their lives.

Men's Health Week, which runs from 12 – 18 June 2023, serves as a reminder that prioritising one's health is crucial for a fulfilling and meaningful life. This initiative sheds light on the unique challenges that men face when it comes to mental health and encourages them to break the stigma surrounding seeking help.

Through a range of activities, resources, and community engagement, Men's Health Week seeks to:

Promote Mental Well-being: Men often face societal pressure to be strong and resilient, which can hinder their ability to seek help when dealing with mental health challenges. Men's Health Week aims to destigmatise mental health issues and encourages men to prioritise their mental well-being. By seeking professional support and engaging in open conversations, men can find the help they need and deserve to overcome challenges and lead happier, fulfilling lives.

Enhance Physical Fitness: Regular physical activity plays a vital role in maintaining overall health. Men's Health Week emphasises the importance of engaging in physical exercise to reduce the risk of various health conditions such as heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Encouraging men to adopt healthy habits and make time for regular exercise can significantly improve their physical well-being and lead to a positive ripple effect on their friends and family.

Cultivate Community Support: Men's Health Week aims to bring communities together to create a supportive environment for men seeking assistance. Local organisations, healthcare providers, and community centres can collaborate to offer workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns to raise understanding and encourage men to seek the support they need. By fostering a sense of camaraderie and belonging, men are empowered to take control of their health and inspire others to do the same. We want to create a legacy of support and continue aim to design, support organisations who want to make a difference.

Men’s Action Network believes that by actively participating in Men's Health Week, men can initiate life-changing transformations. By taking charge of their mental and physical well-being, men not only enhance their own lives but also become positive role models for their friends and family, creating a ripple effect that extends throughout their communities, again creating a legacy of support.

"Men's Health Week provides an incredible opportunity for men to prioritise their health and well-being," Chris Kerr (Manager) from Men’s Action Network.

"We urge men to seize this moment, reach out for support, and take the necessary steps to improve their lives. By doing so, they become agents of change, positively impacting their loved ones and inspiring a healthier and happier community."
