A Derry pub canopy that sparked controversy because it partially covered the Derry Girls mural has been removed.

The rooftop to the outside area of Badgers Bar was erected in September.

The installation of it had caused much criticism, with the mural becoming one of the most visited sites in Derry since it was first unveiled in 2019.

The image portrays the main characters of the Emmy award-winning Channel 4 comedy series, Erin, Michelle, Orla, Clare, and James.

The decision to remove the awning is not known to be one that is permanent or temporary, with it coming down on Monday, October 14.

However, now that it has been removed, tourists can resume the practice of taking a selfie with or photo of the iconic city mural.
