Irish Dancing Magazine has named Emma Bonner, founder of the Emma Bonner Academy of Irish Dance, as a recipient of the prestigious 2024 Global Excellence in Teaching Award.

This international honor highlights exceptional teachers who inspire their students and build community through Irish Dance.

The award winners were announced in December 2024 and are celebrated in Irish Dancing Magazine’s Mid-December 2024/January 2025 edition, which provides extensive coverage of the honorees’ achievements and contributions to the Irish Dance community.

Emma’s love for Irish Dance began at the age of three, sparked by a chance visit to a feis at Derry’s Guildhall. That moment set her on a path that included competitive success and touring with the world-famous Lord of the Dance. After overcoming health challenges, Emma returned to the dance world in 2018 as a teacher, inspired by her mentor, Julie Evans.

At her academy in Carnhill, Emma ensures dance is accessible to everyone. She offers a free “Waddlers and Toddlers” class for ages 2 to 3½, giving young children their first taste of Irish Dance. To further support families, she created a dancewear recycling program so children can participate confidently, regardless of financial circumstances.

Emma’s students often shine in performances at Derry’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and in local care homes, bringing Irish culture to the broader community. Her teaching is praised for building confidence, resilience, and a love of dance in every student she mentors.

Denise Keane, Publisher of Irish Dancing Magazine, shares, “Emma Bonner embodies the values we celebrate through this award. Her creativity, compassion, and commitment to her students are truly inspiring. It’s teachers like Emma who ensure that Irish Dance continues to thrive and enrich lives.”

Irish Dancing Magazine is the world’s leading publication for Irish Dance, offering news, resources, and inspiration to dancers, teachers, and enthusiasts globally. The Global Excellence in Teaching Award, now in its fourth year, is supported by Set the Stage with Butke Awards, Feisty Fitzy, Harlequin Floors USA, and CIE Tours.
