After a parcel of drugs was intercepted by Royal Mail police searched an address and seized drugs and two phones and a man told them 'no one will get access' to them.

Adam Toner (38) of Great James Street in Derry appeared at the local Magistrates' Court charged with a series of drug offences that were said to have occurred on July 4.

A officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.

He told the court that Royal Mail intercepted a parcel containing 3 different types of drugs.

The parcel was addressed to Toner at his home address and police attended.

Other drugs were allegedly found in the property as well as two mobile phones.

The officer said that some of the drugs in the property were identical to those in the intercepted parcel and added that the tablets posed 'a significant threat to the public and the defendant.'

He added that the defendant was 'neither safe nor suitable' for a field impairment test and was deemed unfit for interview when initially taken into custody.

Toner accepted responsibility for the drugs on the flatm but denied knowing about the parcel and said he 'had been set up' by others who he wouldn't name.

As regards the phones Toner was said to have laughed and said no one would ever access them.

Bail was opposed as Toner has 79 previous convictions with 28 of them for drugs and police said it was 'inevitable' Toner would reoffend.

Defence solicitor Chris Logue said his client denied knowing about the parcel and 'clearly has a drug problem'.

Bail was refused and Toner was remanded in custody to appear again on July 10.
