Funding to undertake a structural assessment of the Foyle Bridge with a view to increasing the height of barriers on the bridge has been welcomed.

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Pádraig Delargy said: "For the past number of years we have been working with the Departments for Infrastructure, Health and Justice as well as other key partners in the city to progress a business case for funding for the Foyle Bridge.

"I met with Minister Kimmins and regional DFI staff a number of weeks ago to again make the case for barriers to be progressed at the Foyle Bridge.

"It is even more timely following the coroner in the inquest into the death of Rory Hughes, who fell from the bridge in 2019, calling for urgent action to be taken.

"This conversation came about on the back of the work done by Our Future Foyle, Foyle Search and Rescue and all those who have played a key role in designing this and in advancing the conversation around suicide prevention.

"This is a very sensitive matter. Suicide has impacted so many families in Derry, including my own. It has been the consistent campaigning of families which has ensured this issue has remained a top priority.

"The Minister has now allocated much needed funding to progress the structural assessment, a required step before advancing the barriers on the bridge. We will continue working with all partners to move this forward as quickly as possible."
