A photo postcard print view of Mountcharles railway station around 1950 has been bringing back many great memories to both train lovers and those who still remember the County Donegal Railway itself.
Thanks to the photo archive of the Capuchin Annual, who have retained the picture postcard amongst their collections, we know that the the station was constructed by the Donegal Railway Company as part of the Donegal Town to Killybegs section of the Derry to Killybegs narrow gauge railway line, which opened in August 1893.
Mountcharles station was closed in January 1960 following the cessation of passenger services on the line.

The few lines on the back of the postcard that says everything - 'The little railway was the best of all'
Although the railway track has now been removed, some of the buildings associated with the station are still extant, according to the Capuchin archives.
Formerly one of the largest narrow-gauge railways in either Britain or Ireland, the Donegal Railway remains an important element of the transport heritage of the region and was affectionately termed the ‘Wee Donegal’.
This is reflected in an annotation on the reverse of this postcard which simply reads ‘This little railroad was the best of all’.
The postcard forms part of the photographic archive of ‘The Capuchin Annual’ collection.
